200!

Today is a big day! It is my 200th blog post. I know this past year has been really slow, but I have made a new school year resolution (did you know you could do that? because you totally can!) to start blogging more often. How else can I hope to one day make a living off a monetized/sponsored blog? Hey, if other girls can do it then why not me?! I mean I have half a master's degree for pete's sake! If that's not sponsorship worthy than I don't know what is. Anywho, I digress.

In honor of my 200th blog post I'm going to tell you 200 awesome things!

Ok, that is a little ambitions so I'm not going to do it. But yesterday was one of those good days that makes people (namely speaking me) realize that as long as you do your very best the rest will work itself out.

First of all, I found out yesterday I received a scholarship. This is amazing because (1) the department had forgotten to inform me of said scholarship and (2) I did not expect to get any scholarship money!
It feels good to know that someone saw me as a student with enough potential to want to help fund my education! The faith shown in me by some generous stranger helped me to resolve to do my very best this year in school. And I'm going to hold myself to that. I don't want to let myself or my donor down!!

Second of all, I bought my books from amazon for less than $200!

Third of all, I proceeded to dig up all my old text books sitting around the house and sold those books to amazon for MORE than $200!

I mean what a financially fantastic day!

Oh, and I got to ride a giant swing at a rope's course.

And I made yummy shepard's pie for my husband (because I have one of those now). And I got this awesome T-shirt. And I was published . . . kind of.

And in honor of the happy 200 here are some fun moments from the honey moon in Townsend, Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

And no one has ever even seen these so be excited!!!

Carrot Cake

For some reason still quite unbeknownst to me, Tony's favorite cake is carrot cake. I am a chocolate lover myself and cannot really understand why a birthday cake would be wasted on a cake of the carrot variety. However, it was not my birthday so carrot cake it was. BUT I've never cooked a carrot cake before. I came to find out in a hilariously awful way that baking carrot cake is not quite the same as baking regular cake. I rather pride myself on my cake baking/decorating abilities. This carrot cake essentially crushed my grandiose dreams of a future career as a cake baker/decorator extrodinaire.

For the first time in my life, I am ashamed to admit, my cake stuck to the bottom of the pan when I took it out of the pan. The entire bottom of the cake was stuck to the pan and I had to piece it back together in chunks . . . like a Frankenstein or Sally cake. Obviously that wouldn't do so I decided to flip it again onto yet another plate. Now this is where this experience got really mortifying. The top of the cake (which was on the bottom at this point) stuck to the plate it was on. It didn't just stick . . . this thing stuck hard. The entire middle portion of the cake (along with a good 2-3 inches of cake) stuck in a large chunk to the plate. So now my cake was Frankenstein on one side and giant gaping hole on the other. It was too late at this point to make another cake so I had to salvage the pathetic remains of my destroyed cake. I coated it in thick yellow icing and covered it in candles. It was without a doubt the absolute worst cake I have ever made in my entire life. I was so disappointed and marginally upset.

In the end it didn't look too bad (even though I was still not happy with it). And guess what!

It tasted just fine!

Shortly before Tony's birthday I received an e-mail from his mother outlining exactly how birthdays are to be celebrated in the Torres family. The cake, party, and pictures part I already had covered. It was the next little bit (which is definitely not a tradition in my family) that I was particularly excited about. Actually, I was a bit excited and quite a little bit guilty about it too. I wouldn't want this done to me on my birthday, but traditions are traditions. AND who am I to go against a mother's wishes?!

And this is pretty much my favorite picture right now:

More Life Lessons (Stress Management Pt. 2)

I'm having sushi for lunch tomorrow and tomorrow night is my turn to cook

darn it! i should have knocked on wood! as hard as i could!

Yes, you should just always be doing that.

keep doin that, mama cat

Why are you obsessed with rhymes?!

they pass the times!
so get in line
and say a rhyme

That is Michael's and my conversation. do you see
what i put up with?

(Excerpt from a conversation I had with Jessica tonight.)

So how often is it that you get to talk to two of your best friends who live nearly 2,000 miles away in one night? Yeah, not so often. But tonight I did! They were both on Facebook at the same time, and I was very happy to talk to them. I was simultaneously carrying on three Facebook conversations, texting three different people, and watching a WWII Doc on The History Channel.

I kept laughing because of things said in the Facebook conversations, but all my roommates saw was the WWII Documentary on T.V. I think they were marginally worried I saw a sadist until I explained why I was really laughing--and it certainly wasn't because of the documentary. I was mostly the poem above, how Michael wants Jessica to name her new VW Jetta Puddlesmacks, and how Michael will randomly show up in D.C. (most likely at the worst possible time like while we're at the pentagon or something) and get dragged off by the security guards while yelling "Fin!" with his free arm outstretched toward me. When my classmates ask if I know him of course I will respond, "No."

We had another amazing lesson in OB class today. We talked about what anger really is and the chemical processes behind it. It is literally possible to be angry for 2-3 days straight if you let yourself get so angry that your adrenaline starts pumping. I don't know about other people, but I can't handle the yucky feeling of being angry for days at a time. No thank you.

Just like stress, we learned it is possible to control anger. When you get that first little pop of anger (this is not adrenaline) you just have to let it go. Don't let it get to that stage where your body is producing anger-fueled adrenaline for days at a time!

We talked about how expressed anger and violence are merely a manifestation of need for control. We even watched a clip from Shindler's List about power.

Truly effective leaders lead by example with love and tolerance. When a king pardons a thief, he likely has created a loyal subject. When he kills the thief he just has a corpse.

(On a lighter note side bar--"And you think killing people will make them like you, but it just makes them dead." Is possibly my favorite quote from A Very Potter Musical said by You-Know-Who himself who incidentally is played by Ralph Fiennes in the movie who also happens to play Amon Goth in Shindler's list.)

Basically, as a leader you want your subordinates to follow you out of respect and love--not fear. Showing mercy and pardoning when someone does something wrong makes one a good leader. Amon Goth was unable to to see the power in mercy and forgiveness and simply continued on in the violence and punishment power he was used to. Needless to say it did not turn out well for him--not at all.

We also talked about how a lot of people shy away from power because they do not want it. We always hear how power corrupts and absolutely power corrupts absolutely. However, we have to learn how to exercise power in this life. God, our ultimate exemplar, is omnipotent. That is to say He is all powerful. If we want to become like him one day, we must have power and use it the right way or how will we ever be ready to assume a position of omnipotence?

Also, the person who said never let a sunset on an argument needs to be kicked in the teeth. Sometimes the best cure for an argument is to step away, calm down, and then rationally discuss the issue when the anger is gone. Trying to address an issue when you are still upset (and consequently irrational) nearly always ends badly.

Now I am certainly not a morning kind of person, but I will admit that things never seem so bad in the morning. Sometimes the best resolution to an argument is to sleep on it. The angry-I am right and you are wrong and that's the way it is mentality from the night before is gone. Chances are if you tried to duke it out when you are in this mentality (not to mention tired on top of it) the situation will only escalate.

Even though we might know all these techniques for coping with anger and stress sometimes things seem completely overwhelming nonetheless, and it is nearly impossible to discern any reason why things are the way they are. In those times, the best thing to do it put things into the eternal perspective. Remember who is really in control of things and put it in His hands.

Only here would I ever learn this in a graduate school organizational behavior class.

In Bronco We Trust

Saturday was one of those good days. You know, one of those good days that was extra good because you weren't even expecting it to be anything at all.

I had planned on attending the HELP reunion in the morning and then spending the day studying and doing things that are important albeit boring.

Instead, I spent the entire day with my favorite friends from Africa (that I lived with in Africa . . . they are not African). We ate pizza, talked about our favorite African memories including (but not limited to) squeeze yourselves, fierce (but really parasite) Pierce and Blurry Flurry our favorite Irish friends, the goat pee incident and Edith's reenact of said incident, the joys of wearing eyeliner and squeezing four people on one small boda boda.

Then, for the first time this season, I went to the football game. Can you say 8th row right behind the goal? I can:

Oh, yeah . . . and BYU won. About time, huh?

New favorite artist: Ray LaMontagne
I will carefully choose my favorite song and post it soon. I haven't picked one quite yet.

Still Raining

If I just so happen to be in California when it finally decides to drop off into the Pacific...

I swear it!

I will not be happy one little bit.

I'm going to visit a MRF tomorrow for work. It's in Fontana. I don't really know where that is, but I do know that it requires leaving at 6:30 am to get there. Hello 5:30 am! It's been awhile since we've seen each other.

In other news, I received this e-mail today:

Dear Rachel,
Congratulations on receiving your Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University.
As of 1/21/2010 your diploma was mailed to:...

well you get the idea. It reminded me that I am in fact graduated for real real now. Crazy huh?

DONE

Behold the College Graduate(s):

I am very pleased with how mature of an adult I have become!

All I have to do it print off my already completed print publishing portfolio on campus tomorrow, stick it in a folder, and turn it in and my undergraduate college career is officially over. Turning in a portfolio is a rather anticlimactic way to finish college isn't it?

I fully intend on going to see A Christmas Carol and eating a cheeseburger tomorrow night to celebrate. Also, I'm going to drop about $500 on Adobe Creative Suite tomorrow. I've only been wanting it for about 2 years now.

My mom is coming in the morning too!

I must admit, I'm pretty happy.

Finals Week

Finals here:

Have to be better than finals here at BYU.

I'm just saying! I caved tonight and broke my ban on carbonated/caffeinated beverages. I'm weak with exhaustion after staying up until 3 writing a 10-page paper, and I love Diet Dr. Pepper oh so much! What's a girl to do?

If everything goes as planned, I will be finished by tomorrow night! The end is in sight. I can't wait to be an official college graduate. No more papers, tests, papers! Sounds like a wonderful life to me.

In other news, I sustained a pretty sweet battle wound playing broom hockey tonight for FHE! It makes me look hardcore, even though the fact is I'm a little terrible at it. Might I just say, hockey rinks (the ones where hockey teams actually play, not just the regular ice skating rinks) smell like B.O. in a disgustingly major way. Ewww. I pretty sure there is still some of the odor lingering in my hair or something because I keep getting whiffs of it every so often. And again, ewww.

I think it's time I took a shower.

And a song that always makes things a little less stressful:

What I'm Really Doing When I Should be Doing Homework

Silly String fight during break:

And what my kids did last week in school:

I also got bored and baked a turkey pot pie which is currently in my freezer and an oreo pie is sitting in my fridge right now. Going home tomorrow!!!! SOMEBODY SCREAM!

Culinary Arts

I cooked dinner tonight for some friends: chicken and dumplings, asparagus, carrots, biscuits, and cherry pie. Might I just say I love to cook. For some reason, I find joy in making food for other people (particularly food they like). I get the "I feel bad" line a lot from people, but I'm here to say stop it! If I didn't want to give you my food I wouldn't. I honestly enjoy cooking and how will I ever know if I'm any good if other people don't eat it!

Experimenting with new recipes, wearing an apron, standing over a hot stove, using a rolling pin--I love it! Cooking is always a fun time for me. I feel like it's about as close as I'll ever get to an artist. Running around the kitchen while cutting, stirring, chopping, steaming, baking, etc. multiple dishes at the same time while managing not to burn anything AND on top of that to make it still taste good qualifies as art to me.

I decorate cakes/cupcakes too, don't ya know!

Yes, those are squirrels and acorns for our favorite little actor Tiny Elizabeth Walker! And thanks to Jessica and Wewe for lending a big hand in the creation of these particular cupcakes.

So yeah, I've spent the past four and a half years studying to start a career as a public relations professional. I am fixing to move to Los Angeles to spend another four months interning for a PR firm, and then I plan on attending graduate school here at BYU in the fall to receive my MPA with most likely a human resources emphasis.

However, I would absolutely love to go to culinary school some day. Yeah!?

Why not make the world a happier place by baking cookies like Maggie Gyllenhaal in Stranger Than Fiction? I think that is a job I could be proud of.

To Tennesse: Tuesday
Thanksgiving with the family in Jamestown: Thursday
New Moon/Posh Thanksgiving ft. Star Trek: Friday
Dad's Birthday Party: Saturday

This week is looking wonderful!

Graduate School Here I Come

My friend introduced me to this site. Some of it is stupid, but for the most part I find it completely hilarious. Go check out My Life is Average. It rivals fail blog in my humble opinion. Here is my favorite I read today:

Today I was sitting in my math and my very pregnant math teacher made a joke earlier about if her water broke at school. While she was up at the board, she turned around slowly, grabbed her stomach, and screamed. Everyone was scared because we thought she was really having the baby and then she runs to her computer and yells, "I forgot about my strawberries on Farmville!" New favorite teacher? Indeed.

and this one too:

Today I discovered that if you type in googlegooglegooglegoogle.com, you get one page with four different Google browsers, and they all run independently. I have no idea how this is useful in any way but that's not going to stop me from doing it.

Oh and who has two thumbs and scored a 1240 on her GRE today:

THIS GIRL!

It's lucky I scored that well too. I had a rather dramatic and disappointing experience with a breakfast burrito covered in extremely spicy salsa just before the test (or at least extremely spicy for 8:15 in the morning). That will teach me to go to McDonald's again. What happened to the classic bland breakfast burritos. Egg and cheese rolled in a tortilla--that's all I wanted! :(

This score qualifies me for all the graduate schools I am currently looking into. How awesome is that? It makes me very happy to know I will never have to sit through that test again. I mean, my experimental section was a writing one. I didn't even know that was an option.

Also, I am quite excited to go home on Tuesday. Have I mentioned that recently?!

In honor of the South and my love for country/folk/bluegrass music here is a video from my favorite female artist who I also coincidentally grew up listening to:

How amazing must it be to be able to sing that beautifully live? It is only one of
my greatest desires. We were playing a question game the other day, and were asked
what our dream job was. I immediately answered Hayley Williams from Paramore.
However, I would be perfectly happy with Alison Krauss, too.

And a big thanks to my friend who procured me a ticket to the BYU football game
tomorrow. I am rather looking forward to it!

Party Review

I have decided that facebook event invites are like direct mailers. You can only expect to have a very, very low percentage of response. However, there were about 15 people here, which is a good number for our small living room with limited seating. Some more party prep pics:

Today has been a pretty happy day for me. I took a midterm that was nowhere near as difficult as I imagined. Honestly, the worst part was when my hand got really tired during the short answer portion. I really haven't been doing a lot of actual writing on paper lately, obviously, and I'm a little rusty.
I am ready to put my zipper in my skirt!

I got another call about a job interview (that brings my total up to three). And I got an e-mail response for the only unpaid internship I'd be willing to accept. It's for a record company affiliated with Deseret Books. I have always wanted to work in music business and this might be a good start!

Oh, and I have a ticket for the football game tomorrow, and it's only $10!
Go Cougs!

And she's not looking back!

Back when I was a wee little Pre-Comms major I took News Writing 211. For one of our assignments we had to write a feature on someone in the class. I found the one my friend LaKia wrote about me under my bed a few nights ago. And am now retyping it here for your reading pleasure.

She doesn't look like the average girl that goes to BYU. She doesn't dress like the average girl that goes to BYU. And she definitely doesn't sound like the average girl that goes to BYU.

With a distinctive southern accent, Rachel Finley, 19, is a sophomore majoring in pre-communications, but her heart and soul lies in music.

"I never get tired of listening to music."

Growing up in Maryville, Tenn., a suburb of Knoxville, Finley knew early on in her life that she wanted to make her mark in the music industry.*

"It's something I can do for the rest of my life because I love it so much," said Finley.

Her freshman year at BYU started off as any other. She had the typical first-time away from home jitters. She recalls her first day in the dorms with fondness.

She spent that day sitting in her dorm room, crying.**

She didn't begin to feel comfortable in her new surrounding until she met her roommate, Emma Wirkus, 19, from Cottonwood Heights, Utah.

"Fate brought Emma and I together," Finley proudly exclaims.

I might not have been fate so much  as the housing questionnaire they filled out prior to moving into Deseret Towers in August of 2005.

They both mentioned their love for alternative music, and because of this similar interest they wound up roommates and now best friends.

"Freshman year was weird," Finley said.

Coming from a high school where she was only one of three Latter-day Saint students, Finley found herself becoming overwhelmed at BYU.

Her saving grace became music.

Finley's love of concerts turned her second semester here into a bit of a challenge.

"I would go to concerts almost every week," Finley said.

A look through her room and you can get a sense of the fun she and her friends have had a concerts.

Posters from bands like Hellogoodbye and Saves the Day line her wall, and tacked to the bulletin board in her living room are tickets to future concerts.

In March, she's planning to go see Brand new and then two days later she's going to watch Cute Is What We Aim For, both in Salt Lake City.

Some of her favorite bands are The Shins***, Jack's Mannequin, Brand New, and Circus [Circa if you will] Survive.

The music she listens to also influences the way she dresses.

Don't expect to see her wearing the latest designs from Abercrombie and Fitch. Instead, you're more likely to see her in a t-shirt bearing her favorite band's likeness. In fact, two weeks ago she arrived to her news writing class wearing a pullover sweatshirt from a Brand New concert, only to discover another male student in the class wearing the same thing.****

This semester Finley is trying her hand at music, but instead of from a spectator vantage point, this time it's on the performance end.

She's taking university chorale, she's a member of the BYU 192nd Ward Choir and she's joining***** other ward members in a production of the Disney musical "Newsies" for the BYU 12th Stake "Spring Sing."

With her spending more and more time on the stage, Finley insists, "I'm no good at music." [Which is mostly true.]

That remains to be seen, but she does have aspirations to learn how to play the bass and someday starting her own all-female band.

Her goal, though, is to get into the business side of music.

She hopes to land internships at major record labels to learn the ins and outs of the industry.

She even wants to try her hand at directing music videos.

Being a girl from Tennessee, Finley knew that she would have to branch out in order to make it big someday.

"This was the time to get away," Finley said about her decision to go to BYU.

And she's not looking back.

*I actually wanted to be a doctor that moonlit as a a slushy man.
**I only cried for about 5 minutes after talking on the phone to Shanda that night.
***I didn't actually listen to The Shins back then even though I love them now.
****She didn't finish this part of the story. As a general rule, I hate having the same clothes as other people. I never wore said sweatshirt at BYU again.
*****No I didn't.

I was really happy when I read this. It reminded me how much fun I had my sophomore year.

Of course it also mentions some not so fun times freshman year. It is true that I got so homesick sometimes freshman year that all I wanted to do was immediately apply to UT or ETSU and hop the next plane home (and I very nearly did several times). It's also true that music was my saving grace. Many nights I drove around with no destination listening to Green Day, My Lost Cause, Chiodos, Etc. at unnecessarily loud levels just to vent some frustration and not be sitting in my dorm room alone.
Remembering these things only serves to make me realize how far I have come. I cannot even express how glad I am I stuck it out even at some of those seemingly desperate times. My experiences here have shaped me into the person I was always meant to become, and I love the fact that I can call BYU my Alma Matter. I have great memories, awesome friends, a major I enjoy, the best job, and and all together pretty wonderful life. And yeah the hard times were a part of getting here, but isn't that how it's supposed to be?
